Abstract
1295549 Variable-ratio epicyclic gearing DAIMLER-BENZ AG 10 Nov 1970 [27 Nov 1969] 53469/70 Heading F2D A planetary C.S.G. having ratio establishing brakes B1, B2, B3 and clutches K1, K2 controlling first and second three-element trains 10, 11, is formed as a gear structure providing three forward speeds and reverse, and may, by means not described, be used for four ratios comprises an input shaft 23 driving, via a torque converter 21, a ring 18 of the first train 10 the carrier 14 of which is directly connected to the ring 15 of the second train 11 the carrier 24 of which is connected to an output shaft 25. The sun 16 of the first train 10 is connected via a one-way clutch F to the sun 17 of the second train 11, and, the suns 16 and 17 are respectively controlled by brakes B1 B2. Clutches K1 and K2 serve to connect the first carrier 14 and sun 16 and the second ring 15 and sun 17 respectively, and the brake B3 serves to station the first carrier 14 for reverse. The three forward speed and reverse ratios are obtained as follows: Low.-One-way (Automatic) low or two-way (manual) low may be effected by respectively applying brake B2 alone or both brakes B1 and B2 whereby both suns 16 and 17 are held, both rings 18 and 15 drive and both carriers 14 and 24 are driven, both trains 10 and 11 separately acting, i.e. reducing in series. Thus One-way (automatic) low, reacts through the one-way clutch F to brake B2 only, no other brake acts. And in Two-way (manual) low, both brakes B1 and B2 applied. 2nd.-Engage clutch K1 to lock up front train 10 and apply brake B2, drive via the rear ring 15, from solid front train 10, holding the rear sun 17 at B2 so that the rear train acts alone in reduction. 3rd.-Both clutches K1 and K2 engaged locking both trains 10 and 11 which rotate as a solid unit. Reverse.-Apply brake B3 holding front carrier 14 and rear ring 15 thus reversing front sun 16 which drives through one-way clutch F, and the rear train reduces.
