Abstract
1295280 Panels and composite structures formed thereof J R HALE 27 Nov 1969 [27 Nov 1968] 58143/69 Headings E1B and E1W A panel 11 a constituting a doubly ruled surface and having four edges with a pair of the edges 15a, 15b adjacent one corner equal to each other and a pair of the edges 16a 16b adjacent the opposite corner equal to each other has a configuration so selected that it is capable of arrangement with a plurality of similar panels to form a closed hollow body with one of said edge pairs of each panel adjoining at one end of the body and the other of said edge pairs adjoining at the other end of the body. The panels shown in Fig. 4A have all the edges equal and four such panels form a closed hollow body as in Fig. 15, which shows a view of the apex at one end thereof. The panels may be enclosed within a plane surfaced tetrahedron 17 to form the structural element of Fig. 4B, two edges of each side of the tetrahedron 17 being joined to corresponding edges of the panel 1 1a. A structural element 30 constructed from four such elements of Fig. 4B is shown in Fig. 5. The specification describes several composite structures formed from panels according to the invention which in some cases are enclosed in plane surfaced tetrahedrons and in other cases are used independently thereof. Several of the structures described are composites of a number of elements such as 30, Fig. 4 and 20 Fig. 2B (not shown) which differs from an element 30 in that it comprises three plane surfaced tetrahedrons each containing a panel of which the pair of edges at one end are not equal to the pair of edges at the other end. Panels according to the invention may be constructed of thermoformed plastics and may be used in structural panels and cores thereof, in posts, beams and in aircraft structures.
