Abstract
1295242 Projectiles FRANCE ARMED FORCES MINISTER OF 5 Sept 1967 [1 Dec 1966] 40601/67 Heading F3A A ballistic missile head for projecting a plurality of elementary projectiles 8 comprises a case 5 for housing the projectiles and a cap 1 for closing the case, the cap 1 containing a capsplitting means 3 and a fuse 2 for effecting splitting of the cap and the ejection of the projectiles 8, the cap 1 together with the fuse 2 and the cap-splitting means 3 constituting asub-assembly for connection to another sub-assembly comprising the case 5, a base-plate 6, the projectiles 8 and fire transmission means arranged to effect ejection of the projectiles in response to the firing of the fuse, a delay-action device 12 being provided to effect that the ejection of the projectiles 8 follows the splitting of the cap 1 after a predetermined delay. Secured to the front of the base-plate 6 are guide tubes 7 each containing a stack of the projectiles 8, a hollow piston 9, and a small cartridge-bag 10 filled with a powder propellant, also an axial fire transmission tube 11 provided with the delay-action device 12. The rear face of the base-plate 6 has a central recessed portion 13 in which a firing disc 15 is retained by a washer 14. The delayaction device 12 comprises in succession a stick of firing compound adapted to be struck by the projections and the shock wave produced by the detonation of the charge 4 of the fuse 2, a stick of delay-action compound, and a firing- compound element of which the flame jet propagates through the tube 11 towards the firing disc 15. The firing disc 15 consists of a plastic or cardboard disc to which is secured a celluloid disc and a plurality of fuse-matches disposed according to a grid-like pattern. The detonation of the charge 4 directly fires the cap-splitting means 3, whereby the dispersed fragments of the cap 1 free the outlet aperture of the case 5. The combustion of the delay-action device 12 is started and after a predetermined time-lag has elapsed to permit the ejection of the fragments of the cap 1, a flame jet is propagated through the tube 11. This impinges against the firing disc 15 the combustion of which ignites the cartridge-bags 10. The projectiles 8 are thus projected out from the tubes 7.
