Abstract
1294829 Sterilization TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO Ltd 1 June 1971 [30 May 1970] 18365/71 Heading A2D [Also in Division H5] A method for sterilizing the interior of a vessel containing a liquid with some void space therein comprises moving the vessel so as to cause the liquid to flow over its entire inner walls, and irradiating microwave energy on the vessel while it is moved. The liquid may be milk, juice or other beverage, or liquid medicine. The term "liquid" also includes any non-gaseous material that will flow. The movement may be effected by rocking, rolling, rotating or shaking the vessel. Apparatus is described for effecting these. various movements. In Fig. 1, ampoules of liquid 13 are positioned in holder 12 in micro-wave oven 2. The holder 12 is mounted on movable support 7 which is subjected to a rocking motion by the motor driven cam 11 co-operating with drive rod 8. The ampoules may alternatively be subjected to a rolling motion in an apparatus of the type shown in Fig. 2A wherein ampoules 13 are carried through a micro-wave oven by belt conveyor 16. The ampoules are rotated whilst on the moving belt conveyor by contact with a keep plate 17. The belt conveyor has pawls 18 formed on its upper surface (Fig. 2B, not shown) which engage the ampoules to facilitate their rotation. A rolling movement may also be imparted to the ampoules by allowing ampoules to roll under gravity down inclined chutes which are positioned in a micro-wave oven (Fig. 3A, not shown). The ampoules may be rotated in apparatus described in Figs. 4A, 5 and 6, not shown, and subjected to a shaking motion in the apparatus described in Fig. 8, not shown.
