Abstract

1294582 Alkyl resorcinols ; substituted cyclohexene carboxylates F HOFFMAN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 14 Jan 1970 [22 Jan 1969] 1753/70 Heading C2C A process for the manufacture of alkyl resorcinols of the Formula A wherein R is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 26 carbon atoms copmrises heating a compound of the general Formula B wherein R has the meaning given earlier, R<SP>1</SP> is lower alkyl or phenyl-lower alkyl and X is hydrogen, chlorine, bromine or iodine, to a temperature of from 40‹ to 130‹ C., the heating being carried out in the presence of a halogenating agent (wherein the halogen is chlorine, bromine or iodine) in an inert organic solvent in the case where X is hydrogen. The invention also includes compounds of the Formula C wherein R is alkyl containing 3 to 26 carbon atoms and R<SP>1</SP> is lower alkyl or phenyl-lower alkyl and of the Formula D wherein R is alkyl containing 1 to 26 carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP> is lower alkyl or phenyl-lower alkyl and X<SP>1</SP> is chlorine, bromine or iodine. Compounds C are obtained by reacting an aldehyde of formula RCHO with acetone to produce a compound of the formula RCH(OH)CH 2 COCH 3 . dehydrating the latter to produce a compound of the formula R-CH = CHCOCH 3 and reacting the latter with a malonic ester of the formula R<SP>1</SP>OOCCH 2 COOR<SP>1</SP>. Compounds D are obtained by treating compounds C with an appropriate halogenating agent to introduce chlorine, bromine or iodine as substituent.
