1294542 Spectacle frames GIUSEPPE RATTI INDUSTRIA OTTICA SpA 27 Jan 1970 [28 May 1969 22 Dec 1969] 3945/70 Heading G2J In a spectacle frame each side bar has a flexible portion 5, Fig, 2, formed by a chain of mutually articulated elements 6, 7, 8 held together by an inner metallic core 4. The elements 6 which may be inclined to the length of the side bar, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), may also have crosssections of e.g. elliptical or concave-convex shape, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown). The elements 7 may have protruding edges 10 which may be inclined to each other, Fig. 4 (not shown), to act as limit stops when the side bars are flexed through an angle determined by gaps 11, clearances being provided between elements 7, 8 to assist relative movement. Metal oraplastics material may be used for the elements 7. The side bars are produced by inserting into a bar 20 of synthetic material such as celluloid or cellulose acetate, Fig.12, using an ultrasonic drilling tool, (not shown), tubular members 21 which have holes 25 to allow subsequent passage of the metallic core 4, after which the side faces of the bar are milled to produce the gaps 11. The members 21 which can have 'U' or 'V'- shaped extensions (24), Figs.17, 19, 21, 23 (not shown), may be formed from separate pieces (29), Fig.25 (not shown). Alternatively, holes (28), Fig.16 (not shown), may be ultrasonically drilled using a profiled tool prior to insertion of the members 21.
