Abstract

1294272 Zone-melting NIPPON ELECTRIC CO Ltd 6 Jan 1971 [5 Aug 1970] 695/71 Heading BIS While growing orthoferrite single crystals, by the floating zone-melting method, the formation of gas bubbles and pores, caused by slight variation from the stoichiometric proportions of Fe 2 O 3 to R 2 O 3 , (where R is En, Tb, Y or Yb), is counteracted by operating in an atmosphere of oxygen at a pressure of from 1 to 10 Atmospheres. The polycrystalline orthoferrite feed rod is produced by conventional methods and fused to a seed crystal, for growth generally parallel to the c-axis. The greater the deviation from stoichrometric proportions, the greater the oxygen pressure required. A small proportion of the Fe 2 O 3 , may be replaced by Co 2 O 3 or a combination of CoO and TiO 2 .
