Abstract

1294144 Magnetic compass; Indicating apparatus TMC (CANADA) Ltd 6 May 1970 [16 May 1969] 21851/70 Headings G1F G1J An indicating instrument, such as a magnetic compass, comprising an indicating member 30 supported within a liquid 14 in a spherical cavity 11 is characterized by a mercury column 21 which is located in a recess 22 of the indicating member and which acts to maintain the indicating member vertical immaterial of the orientation of the housing 10 defining the cavity 11. The indicating member 30, which may be defined by a pair of frusto-conical surfaces and have indicating inscriptions thereon, may house a bar magnet 32. The recess 22 in which the mercury is located may be tubular and provided with a constricted portion 38 adjacent its mouth, the mouth being in contact with a mercury pool 20 at the base of the cavity 11.
