Abstract
1294062 Testing soil in situ NAUCHNOISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT OSNOVANY I PODZEMNYKH SOORUZHENY 18 May 1971 15501/71 Heading G1S A soil testing flexible chamber 1 is expanded against the soil walls of a bore hole by filling the chamber with water from a pipe 5, open valve 12, and measuring cylinder 3 communicating with a pressurised gas source via a pipe 7, the deformation of the soil being determined from the variation of the liquid, e.g. water, volume in the cylinder 3. For denser soils it is preferable to use a smaller cylinder 4, or several more cylinders, all in parallel, may be provided . If the ground is extremely soft and the water volume in 3 is inadequate, then the valve 12 should be closed and the valve 11 opened in order to re-fill 3 from a storage tank 6. To avoid test discontinuation while 3 is being topped up the valve 14 should be opened to allow water from 4 to enter the chamber 1.
