Abstract

1293910 Ink-drop writers A B DICK CO 19 Dec 1969 [23 Dec 1968] 62072/69 Addition to 1211955 Heading G4H In an ink drop writer where a stream of ink drops charged by a video signal is projected through an electric field at paper to be written on, the phase of the ink drops is periodically tested by a video test signal which if the phase is correct charges alternate pairs of drops to be charged and uncharged respectively which when projected at a sensor generates a signal of a particular frequency, which is absent if the phase is wrong. Pairs of drops when charged by the test signal will separate and merge with the adjacent uncharged drops, so halving the number of drops in the stream. In Fig. 2 an ink drop writer 40 is driven across paper 50 and back again by motor 52 through half sector gears 56, 64 and on its return to its home position operates switch 74 to stop the motor and generate the video test signal. The electric field deflecting plates 41 do not extend to the home position so that ink drops are projected at a sensor which is either a conducting rod or a rod of piezoelectric material. If the ink drops are correctly phased, the sensor produces a 16-5 kHz signal which in the circuit of Fig. 5 passes filter 105 and is integrated at 107 to operate Schmitt trigger 108. If the 16.5 kHz signal is absent inverter 109 produces an output which together with the output of multivibrator 112 and the delayed signal from home position switch 72 opens AND gate 110 to flip bi-stable circuit 114. One of two OR gates 116, 118 are thereby opened to reverse the phase of the 66 kHz signal generating the stream of ink drops. The delayed home position switch signal restarts the motor via AND gate 126 if the phase detecting circuit has operated. The video test signal is generated by circuit 104 which produces two 7.5 Ás. pulses with a 7.5 Ás. interval for every 35 kHz signal pulse input provided by dividing the 66 kHz signal generating the ink drops.
