1293687 Independent spring suspensions BRITISH LAYLAND (AUSTIN-MORRIS) Ltd 5 Aug 1971 [22 Sept 1970] 45006/70 Heading B7D In a motor vehicle suspension comprising a rear road wheel 1 carried by a trailing suspension arm 3, the arm 3 has oppositely-projecting horizontal journals 4 pivotally mounted in spaced rubber-bushed bearings 5 on the vehicle body 6, a bell-crank lever 7 formed integrally with the arm 3 coaxially of its pivot axis 8 has a first arm articulated to a strut 11 that applies thrust to a coil spring 12 and a second arm articulated to a cradle 13 that supports the spring 12, and a rubber abutment 15 for the cradle 13 is located on or near the vertical plane containing the axis of the wheel 1. Volute or disc metallic springs or a rubber, pneumatic or hydro-pneumatic spring may replace the coil spring shown. The invention may be applied to a suspension comprising upper and lower transverse arms.
