Abstract
1293176 Preserving latex RUBBER RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF MALAYA 1 Dec 1970 [4 Dec 1969] 59379/69 Heading C3E A method of preserving field latex of Hevea, either diluted or undiluted, from coagulation, comprises maintaining the pH of the latex at a value of at least 8, preferably 8À5 to 9À5, by the repeated addition thereto of a nitrogenous base or by a single or repeated addition thereto of urea or by making at least one addition thereto of a nitrogenous base and at least one addition of urea. The nitrogenous base is preferably ammonia but an organic amine is also suitable. The pH of the latex is preferably maintained at a pH of about 9, e.g. 8À5 to 9À5. The initial concentration of ammonia may be 0À05-0À1% by weight of the latex and the total weight of ammonia that is added incrementally over the period until the pH stabilizes may be 0À3- 0À5% by weight. The addition of 0À5-2À0% by weight of urea is sufficient to make further incremental additions of ammonia after the initial pH adjustment unnecessary. Alternatively if urea is used alone an amount in the range 2À0-4À0% by weight is suitable.
