1293118 Improving combustion R O BECKER and L G POISSONNIER 19 April 1971 [20 April 1970 5 Feb 1971] 27028/71 Headings C5G G10A and G 11 [ Also in Division F1] Air for combustion or for an I.C. engine is impregnated with a liquid combustion catalyst, such as tricarbonyl methyl cyclopentadienyl manganese, by passing the air over or through a micro-porous element impregnated with the liquid catalyst. A porous ceramic disc 1, with a number of air passages 2, Fig.1, is mounted in the air supply passage of combustion apparatus, and is supplied with liquid catalyst through a passage 8 and annular duct 7. Additional air may be allowed to enter the air supply passage 3 downstream of the disc 2, and the air may be passed through a passage and disc of smaller diameter than the combustion air delivery passage. In another embodiment, Fig.4, a sleeve of woven refractory fibre 15 surrounds a tube 17 extending across an air supply passage, the end of the sleeve dipping into a reservoir 23 of liquid the level of which is determined by the position of a pipe 19 extending into a container 21. The porous element may be a tube through which the air passes.
