Abstract

1292956 AC machines with DC excitators ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 7 Nov 1969 [12 Nov 1968] 53616/68 Heading H2A In a dynamo-electric machine having a rotor carrying a polyphase exciter output winding 2 whose output is applied to a thyristor bridge 3 to provide the sole DC excitation of a sole main rotor field winding 4 inductively coupled to a main rotor winding 5, and an exciter stator field winding 1 inductively coupled to the exciter output winding 2, there are provided firing gear comprising a firing circuit 10 for generating pulses for firing thyristors the bridge and a polyphase winding 11 on the rotor inductively coupled to the exciter field winding 1 to proprovide an output which determines the synchronisation of the firing cycles of the thyristors, and means to apply to the circuit 10 a signal representing the required firing angle of the thyristors. The machine shown is a turbo-alternator wherein the means includes a transformer rotary coupling 17 although a capacitive or a modulated light beam transmitter may be used. Its output is maintained constant by voltage and current feedback into a comparator 15 also monitored by field winding parameters via amplifier and transformer couplings 19, 20, and the error signal, related to a reference circuit 13 is fed to a fixed frequency oscillator 16. The rotor windings 2, 11 are mutually screened by an earthed screen 12, and the excitor field winding 1 is supplied by an auxiliary permanent magnet excitor 7, 8 or the main alternator or an independent supply. The machine alternatively may be a synchronous motor in which event the control is on its power factor.
