Abstract

1,164,270. Measuring rotational speed, electrically. BROWN BOVERI & CO. Ltd. Dec. 16, 1966 [Dec,18, 1965], No. 56436/66. Heading G1N. An apparatus for the measurement or control of the speed of a rotary asynchronous machine Fig. 1 produces an alternating output voltage having speed-dependent frequency and speed independent constant amplitude. The apparatus comprises an A. C. generator 2, coupled to a shaft of the machine 1, and having separately excited rotor 3 fed through slip rings 5 from an A. C. source 6 with a square waveform voltage a Fig. 2 of constant amplitude at a frequency f h , which is relatively high compared with the rotational frequency of the rotor 3 and machine 1, and a three phase armature 4 which is stationary, or in an alternative embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown) may be rotated by a separate drive. The rotor field induces in the stator sinusoidally modulated A.C. voltages b Fig. 2 where the envelope frequency is proportional to rotor speed na. Demodulator means are provided for removing from the armature output voltage the component at frequency f h to produce a constant amplitude signal at the rotational frequency. The rate of change of flux produced in the stator windings by the rotor rotation is small compared with the rate of change of flux due to the alternating voltage from source 6 and hence the voltage amplitude of the stator output is substantially constant. In an alternative embodiment Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the generator 2 has a stationary three phase stator and a three phase rotor, and the rotor is energized by an auxiliary A. C. source the output waveforms each phase of which are similar to that shown in Fig. 2, that is a square wave voltage at f h modulated by a low frequency voltage. In a further arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the stator is driven by a synchronous machine (9) while the rotor is driven by an asynchronous machine(1) connected to the same three phase source as machine (9). If the stator is driven in the same direction as the rotor than the filter unit (7) produces an output at the slip frequency of the asynchronous machine.
