Abstract
1292810 Laminates; seaming non-metallic sheet material UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 23 Oct 1970 [24 July 1969] 37241/69 Headings B5K and B5N. [Also in Division F2] A method of making a seamed micro-tube or a sheet of seamed micro-tubes comprises bonding together two layers of polymeric material along a plurality of substantially parallel, linear, spaced lines, the internal dimensions of the micro-tube or of the individual micro-tubes being determined by the spacing of the bonds and the thickness of the original layers. Seamed micro-tubes may be produced by a modification of the above method wherein the individual tubes are separated along the bond lines during or after the bonding process Suitable polymeric materials are polycarbonates, polyvinylidene fluoride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl chloride, thermoplastic polyurethanes, nylon-66, polyethylene, polypropylene, poly-4-methyl pentene, polyvinyl alcohol, polystyrene, linear polyesters, cellulose acetate, cellulose triacetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, polyacrylonitrile, polymethyl methacrylate and ABS polymers. The bonding may be effected by heat welding, ultrasonic welding, solution welding or adhesive bonding. One of the layers may be precorrugated prior to bonding. The method of the invention is preferably effected by running a heated roller provided with a plurality of parallel flanges over the superposed sheets or by feeding the two layers into a nip formed by two such rollers with aligned flanges.
