Abstract

129,263. Chabrand, L. Vialet-. June 29, 1918, [Convention date]. Phosphoretted hydrogen and self-lighting signals.-A marine light comprises a chamber 1 containing calcium carbide, a superimposed chamber 2 containing calcium phosphide, and a watertight chamber 3 surrounding the phosphide chamber only and serving to float the apparatus: the parts are arranged so that phosphuretted hydrogen is produced at a very low pressure, and acetylene at a much greater pressure. The water reaches the carbide and phosphide respectively through an orifice 11 and a tube 7, and through an orifice 9 and a tube 8. The phosphoretted hydrogen escapes through an orifice in the top of the chamber 2 and ignites the acetylene which issues from one or more orifices 5 in the top of the tube 4. The tube 7 is surrounded by a perforated tube 21, and a perforated cone 20 surrounds the upper end of the tube 8. The orifices for the entry of water and the escape of gas are normally sealed by soldered strips which are detached by hand or automatically just before the device is used. The buoy may be attached by a cord to a salvage device if it is desired to illuminate and the sealing- strips may be provided with rings attached by cords of unequal length to the ship, so that when the salvage device is thrown overboard, the buoy is dragged after it and the sealing-strips torn off in succession.
