Abstract

1291821 Laminated armour AEROJETGENERAL CORP 20 Sept 1966 42037/66 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] A lightweight impact and delamination resistant, non-metallic armour comprises a plurality of bonded layers of fabric consisting of interwoven glass and nylon fibres. The fabric layers may be impregnated and bonded together with a polyester, epoxy or rubber-phenolic resin. The material is substantially more projectile-resistant than a fabric made of glass or nylon alone. The optimum ratio of glass to nylon lies between 90 parts glass to 10 parts nylon and 10 parts glass to 90 parts nylon, by weight. An outer surface layer of material, e.g. glass, alumina, boron carbide or silicon carbide, having a hardness and compressive strength equal to or greater than hard steel may be provided. The material is especially suitable for use in body armour but can also find use in the protection of personnel carriers or aircraft, e.g. helicopters, which may be required to operate at low altitude, bringing them within range of rifle fire from the ground.
