Abstract

[Also in Division F3] A sheet material resistant to projectiles consists of a backing and a facing, the backing including fibrous material in the form of a closely textured layer and the facing including ceramic material having a diamond hardness number exceeding 700, arranged to form at least one substantially continuous barrier layer, and secured to the backing by fibre-reinforced synthetic resin. The ceramic material may be in pieces arranged close together and a variety of shapes of pieces may be used, e.g. flat plates arranged closely edge to edge, cylinder rods or tubes arranged closely side by side, rods having an arcuate concave-convex cross-section with a convex side of one rod fitting into a concave side of the next, semi-cylindrical rods or tubes laid side by side with their flat faces in a common plane and directed away from the exposed face of the armour, and balls or natural pebbles packed close together. The effect of the ceramic pieces is not only to resist a projectile but to deflect it and shatter it. Resistance to further penetration by the fragments of the projectile is provided by the backing. Advantageously the fibrous material of the backing is embedded in synthetic resin. If the sheet must not only act as armour but also as part of a load-bearing structure, then preferably the fibrous material of the backing is impregnated with a first resin and the rigid pieces are secured to one another and to the backing by a second resin, the first resin being stronger but less flexible than the second resin. The resistance to fragments may be assisted by using a second layer of rigid pieces spaced from the first layer by further fibre-reinforced resin. Damage to the sheet material may be readily repaired by filling a hole cavity with ceramic balls in a dough of glass fibre and resin, and covering with a ceramic plate. The backing is suitably formed from frame-wound rovings of glass fibre pre-impregnated with a polyester or epoxy resin. A suitable resin for bonding the rigid pieces to the backing is an epoxy resin. A ceramic containing at least 95% by wt. alumina, is preferred. The examples described include light armour for use in aircraft to resist 0À3 in. calibre ball bullets and armour to resist 0À3 in. calibre armour-piercing bullets and 40 mm. calibre armour-piercing shells.
