Abstract
1291354 Maleic anhydride BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 30 Sept 1970 [1 Oct 1969 26 March 1970] 46416/70 Heading C2C Maleic anhydride (MA) is continuously manufactured by oxidizing a mixture of C 4 hydrocarbons with air in a tubular reactor in the presence of a catalyst containing TiO 2 , V 2 O 5 and P 2 O 5 , wherein the MA formed is washed out of the reaction gases, the thus formed maleic acid is concentrated and then dissociated into MA and water, followed by continuously distilling the MA thus obtained, the process being characterized by (a) using a mixture of C 4 hydrocarbons containing at least 50% by wt. of unbranched olefinically unsaturated C 4 hydrocarbons, adding this mixture to air heated to 100-200‹ C., adding a volatile inorganic or organic phosphorus compound, (b) feeding the gas mixture to a tubular reactor in which the tubes are packed with a catalyst containing 45-95% by wt. TiO 2 , 0À2-20% by wt. V 2 O 5 and 3-53% P 2 O 5 , (c) maintaining a temperature of 420-600‹ C. within the tubes, heat exchange being effected by a salt bath maintained at 360-440‹ C., which salt bath is circulated through the reactor, evenly on all sides thereof, being fed to the reactor at one end through an annular channel and removed therefrom at the other end through a second annular channel, (d) cooling the effluent reaction gases to 160-180‹ C. and feeding them to a washing tower, in which the MA is washed out by a circulated, cooled, aqueous maleic acid solution, the resultant 30-50% by wt. maleic acid solution is concentrated in one or more film evaporators arranged in cascade fashion to a concentration of more than 90% by wt. and the concentrate is dissociated in a further film evaporator to form MA and steam, the removal of the water of reaction being carried out without inert entraining agents by the direct entrainment by MA vapours, and the cooled MA obtained by fractional condensation is continuously distilled in a distilling system. Preferred phosphorus compounds to be added to the feed stream are C 1-4 trialkyl phosphates.
