Abstract

1291208 Jointing SULZER BROS Ltd 19 April 1971 [27 Feb 1970] 22425/71 Heading B3J [Also in Division F2] A method of producing a gas-tight rolled joint between a tube 2 and a mating member 4, e.g. another tube, comprises (a) forming the tube 2 with an end portion 3 of reduced thickness (b) providing a backing ring 5 of material whose coefficient of thermal expansion α 3 is substantially equal to that of the mating member 4 (c) inserting the backing ring into the tube end portion 3 of reduced thickness and (d) locating the tube end portion 3 and the backing ring into the bored end portion of the mating member whereupon the backing ring and tube are rolled into the mating member. The method is particularly useful to provide a connection between tubes made from materials which cannot be welded together, e.g. a zirconium alloy and stainless steel. To improve the seal in the joint the mating member may be provided with one or more grooves (13, Figs. 2a, 2b) on its inner surface. In another embodiment (Figs. 3a, 3b) both a groove in the mating member and a ridge on the backing ring are provided, the ridge being located opposite the groove. The grooves in the mating member may each be formed with a deeper groove (29, Figs. 4a, 4b) in the inside surface.
