Buffers. - In order to replace a worn buffer case or plunger body without discarding the base-plate or the buffer head, the buffer case or the plunger body is formed as a plain cylindrical tube and attached to the base-plate or to the buffer head respectively by means distinct from the buffer case or the plunger body. Several constructions are described applicable either to the buffer case or to the plunger. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the buffer case A is inserted into an annular flange C formed integral with the base-plate B, and is secured therein by rivets D or bolts E. In other arrangements, the annular flange C is shrunk on to the case A, or the inner end of the case may be expanded over an opening in the flanged base-plate. Fig.5 shows a further construction in which an angle ring F is riveted or welded to the base-plate B and bolted or riveted to the case A. In Fig. 6, a plunger body G is shown as being passed over an angle ring K which is welded or riveted to the buffer head H.
