Abstract

1290778 Production of hydroquinolines LONZA Ltd 22 Oct 1970 [23 Oct 1969] 50247/70 Heading C2C Hydroquinoline and hydroisoquinoline compounds which are N-substituted by acyl, methyl or ethyl or which are N-unsubstituted are obtained by reacting the corresponding quinoline or isoquinoline compound at 160- 280‹ C. with a C 1-4 carboxylic acid or with a mixture of a said carboxylic and a methyl or ethyl ester or anhydride of a said acid. The quinoline starting material may be quinoline itself, isoquinoline or an alkyl-quinoline or isoquinoline. Carboxylic esters employed as starting materials may be prepared in situ and an excess of carboxylic acid or mixture thereof with its ester is preferably used. The reaction may be carried out under autogenous pressure in a solvent.
