Abstract

1290374 Working stone L J BLACKBURN 23 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 58454/69 Heading B5E Apparatus for demolishing or dissembling a structure, such as the wall of a cooling tower, road or concrete pillar comprises a U-shaped frame consisting of sub-frames 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 secured together by plates 20, 22, 24 and channel bars 26 and reinforced by joists 32 and struts. Each leg of the frame has seven square-sectioned tubular guides 36 arranged in an L-shape. Each guide houses a fixed piston 40 and a movable cylinder 42 held against rotation by a square guide-plate 44. Each cylinder is secured to a chisel 46, the chisels 46A at the corner of each L-shape having a right-angled cutting edge. The frame can be supported by a crane or by the wall of the structure to be demolished and the chisels urged towards each other by fluid pressure applied to the cylinders to cut into the wall so that a piece Y, Fig. 3, is broken from the wall, the frame then being moved in the direction Z for the next piece P of the wall to be removed. The apparatus may be used to demolish a roadway by being carried by a tractor having a chain excavator to remove sub-soil beneath the roadway to provide access for the apparatus. In other embodiments, the chisels are mounted on the pistons and the cylinders are fixed, or the chisels on one leg of the frame are fixed and those on the other are movable. The apparatus may be used to cut concrete pillars and consist of a thimble hood having pinching jaws at its skirt.
