Abstract
1289680 11-Cyanoundecanoic acid BP CHEMICALS Ltd 19 April 1971 [15 April 1970] 17888/70 Heading C2C 11-Cyanoundecanoic acid is purified by contacting it in its molten form or as a solution in a water-miscible solvent, as a dispersed phase, with water or water containing a miscible solvent, and recovering solid particles of purified acid from the aqueous phase. The compound may be further purified by fractional freezing. The contacting of the molten crude cyano acid may be effected by continuously vigorously stirring the mixture of the organic and aqueous phases and allowing the mixture to cool or by spraying the organic phase into a vigorously agitated aqueous phase which is maintained at ambient temperature, e.g. by pumping the molten crude cyano acid or a solution thereof through a plurality of fine jets.
