Abstract
1289179 Velocity-modulated tubes VARIAN ASSOCIATES 24 Sept 1969 47095/69 Heading H1D In a high frequency discharge tube incorporat - ing a cavity resonator having a re-entrant drift tube, the free end of the drift tube is provided with axially extending slots 21, Fig. 2B, and is coated on either or both the interior and exterior surface with lossy material 22, to suppress unwanted modes. The slots may be radial, Fig. 2B, or non-radial, Fig. 2G, and may, in the opposed ends of adjacent drift,tubes, be either axially aligned (Fig. 1, not shown), or azimuthally out of phase (Fig. 3, not shown). Lossy materials referred to include an Al/Cr/Co/Fe alloy and electrolytically deposited iron. Reference is made tothe use of the arrangement in klystrons, hybrid tubes, and travelling-wave tubes incorporating coupled-cavity slow-wave structures having reentrant drift tubes.
