Abstract
1289171 Powdered block and graft polymers DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 19 May 1970 [23 May 1969] 26352/69 Headings C3G and C3P A powder is produced from an elastomeric block copolymer or an elastomeric graft copolymer, said copolymer having one or more amorphous non-elastomeric polymer blocks and one or more elastomeric polymer blocks, by contacting the block or graft copolymer with a dispersing liquid which is a non-solvent for at least one of the elastomeric polymer blocks and which is a very poor solvent for at least one of the amorphous non-elastomeric polymer blocks, at a temperature below the glass-transition temperature of the amorphous non-elastomeric polymeric block or blocks. The dispersing liquid may be acetone, acetaldehyde or an acetoacetic ester. The dispersions of copolymer may be stabilized by addition of a liquid non-solvent for the copolymer e.g. methanol and/or water; by addition of a non-elastomeric homopolymer having the same monomer units as the amorphous non-elastomeric polymer block e.g. polystyrene, and then admixture with a liquid non- solvent for the polymer; or by the addition of a surface active agent e.g. stearic acid, and a liquid non-solvent for the polymer. The examples relate to the following block copolymers:-styrene/isoprene/ethylene episulphide, styrene/butadiene, styrene/isoprene and acrylonitrile/isoprene; and to a graft copolymer of styrene and isoprene. The liquid dispersing agent exemplified is acetone.
