Abstract
1289144 Incinerators COMBUSTION POWER CO Inc 2 Sept 1969 [30 Aug 1968] 43440/69 Headings C5G and G10A Refuse W, from a receiving and storage assembly A after passing through shredders B and a rotary drier C, passes to one or more pressurized combustion assemblies E, each of which is supplied with air from and delivers hot gases to a combined compressor-turbine assembly D which drives an electric generator F. In one form of combustion assembly E, the comminuted refuse from rotary feeder 24 is burnt in a fluidized bed 32 of sand particles to which limestone or dolomite may be added to reduce acid vapour formation. Sewage sludge may also be supplied to and burnt in the bed. Air from compressor 20 supplied through duct 25 both fluidizes the bed and supports combustion, the hot gases produced passing through particle separators 36, in the form of inertial separators, electrostatic precipitators or mat filters, to the drive portion 37 of the turbine. Fine ash from separators 36 and larger inert residues from combustion chamber 31 are discharged to a residue chamber 35'. Alternatively Fig. 6 (not shown), a forced draught fan may supply combustion and fluidizing air to the bed, the air from the compressor being indirectly heated in tubes traversing the fluidized bed, before passing back to the drive portion of the turbine. At least part of the filtered inlet air 21 entering the compressor 20, is drawn from the vicinity of the receiving, shredder and drier assemblies A, B, C, and as this air is subsequently heated any noxious vapours are consumed. A part 19 of the hot turbine exhaust gases is supplied to rotary drier C, the remainder generating heating or process steam, or steam for desalinization, in a boiler 38, prior to discharge. The compressor may provide a vacuum for drawing refuse through underground pipe-lines (not shown) to the receiving assembly A. Alternatively Figs. 7 to 9 (not shown), the combustion assemblies may be of the gasifier type disclosed in Specification 1289143.
