Abstract

1288824 Control of burner reactant flow ratio LAND PYROMETERS Ltd 6 May 1971 [6 May 1970] 21761/70 Heading F4T [Also in Division G1] Control means for the reactant flow ratio for at least one burner 1 comprise at least one valve 2 for controlling the general level of flow of a reactant to the burner; a variator 7 for applying to the flow determined fluctuations of low frequency as compared with the natural frequency of flame flicker and small amplitude compared with the general level of flow of the reactant, via an electrical or mechanical actuator 4; a detector 10 for radiation from the flame 6 of the burner and for emitting a signal corresponding to the radiation, via an amplifier 11; a comparator 9, such as a phase-sensitive detector, for assessing the polarity of any correlation between the applied fluctuations and the signal from the detector 10; and an adjuster 5 (which may be actuator 4) responsive to the polarity of correlation for adjusting the reactant flow ratio. The variator 7 may produce periodic fluctuations and may be a mechanical vibrator with a transducer 8, or an electrical oscillator. When applied to an installation utilizing a number of burners, a single detector 10 may serve for all the burners by applying different fluctuations to each burner and switching the comparator 9 sequentially between them, or by applying the fluctuations to one burner at a time and switching the appropriate adjuster to the comparator, or alternatively individual detectors may be provided for each burner and different fluctuations applied to each. Specification 1,288,825 is referred to.
