Abstract
1288778 Releasable fastenings FRUEHAUF CORP 22 Oct 1969 [31 Jan 1969] 51679/69 Headings E2A and E2B An assembly comprises a door 11, a frame to one side element 15 of which the door is hinged, a brace member rigidly fixed on the door adjacent to the unhinged vertical edge thereof and of a length to extend a substantial distance above and below the door said frame having a header 13 and a sill 14 located above and below the door opening, a rotatable element secured to the door adjacent the brace member, a cam finger 77 on each end portion of the rotatable element, means 64, 65 for rotating the rotatable element, means 32 carried by the header and the sill respectively which are engageable by the cam fingers when the door is substantially closed and the rotatable element is rotated for drawing the door to a fully closed position with the end portions of the brace member in engagement with the header and the sill, and means 68 on said door which is engaged by said rotating means when the door is in fully closed position for maintaining said rotatable element in the position in which the door is fully closed. In the construction shown the rotatable element is a rotatable tube 51, which is supported by two end brackets 56 and two intermediate brackets 63 so that it extends with its axis parallel to that of the brace member. The sill and header each have an aperture 31 for receiving the means 32 which abuts a rear wall 33 and is welded in position 34. The means for rotating element 51 is a U-shaped element 64 welded to the tube 51 and an operating lever 65 carried by the U shaped element. The means 68 is a plate which is bolted to the door and which has a struck out portion 67 providing a recess into which the lever 65 can be pivoted to hold the tube 51 against rotation with the fingers in their fastening positions; above the recess is a pivoted strap 73 which is biased by gravity to a position in which it closes the recess; the strap 73 and the struck out portion of the plate 68 have apertures which are aligned in the fastening position of the strap 73 and through which securing means (e.g. a padlock) can be passed. The brace member includes a channel element 25 inside of which are upper and lower bolting plates 41 which are connected by a bar 44; the upper plate 41 has a truncated keyhole slot 42 through it while the bottom plate 41 has a keyhole slot 43 through it; each of the means 32 carried by the header and sill of the frame respectively has a truncated conical lug 35 which extends forwardly of the face of the header or sill and over which the keyhole slot of the corresponding bolting plate can engage during closing movement of the door; each of the lugs has an annular recess 30 and when the door is tightly closed the edges of the keyhole slot are aligned with the annular recesses of the lugs and moving the bolting plates upwardly so that the door is fastened to the header and sill. The lugs enter the channel element through rings 38 welded to the channel element, each ring having an internal truncated conical surface which mates with the conical surface of the corresponding lug 35 when the door is in closed position. The bar connecting the bolting plates is moved vertically by an L-shaped lever 81 an end portion of which extends within the channel element 25 where it is connected to the bar 44 by a pin 83, the movement of the lever being limited by a pair of blocks 84 welded to the inner face of the channel element 25; the other end portion of the lever has two U-shaped projecting elements 88 thereon which are engageable with opposite edges of the lever 65; the arrangement is such that when the lever 65 is moved into the channel provided by the struck out portion 67 of the plate 68 it pivots the lever 81 and slides the bar 44 vertically so that the bolting plates fasten the door. As shown the frame carries a second door with a similar fastening means. The bar 44, the bolting plates, the lugs 35 and the lever 81 can be omitted if desired it is also stated that a plurality of brace-members and bolting means can be provided on each door.
