Abstract

1288498 Electric couplings MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON 27 Oct 1970 [27 Oct 1969] 51037/70 Heading H2E [Also in Division H1] A gas cooled electrical supply lead comprises a conductor consisting of a plurality of twisted or corrugated individual strands randomly bunched together and placed in a tube or sleeve through which a coolant gas flows. As shown a joint between the conductor bundle of such a lead and a terminal is produced by introducing conductor bundle 6 into the conical bore of connecting conductor 7 until it impinges on a sealing disc 8. Conical mandrel 9 is centred and forced in and loaded with a force P, which is such that plastic deformation of the wire occurs at the contact joints between them. The connecting conductor is electrically heated to the fusion temperature of silver solder 11, supplied through aperatures 10, and the conductor bundle is welded together and to the connecting conductor 7. On cooling the mandrel is removed to leave a flow channel for the coolant gas.
