1288258 Fluid regulation UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 16 Oct 1970 [22 Oct 1969] 51873/69 Heading G3H [Also in Division G6] An adjustable fluid-flow impedance, which tends to suppress cavitation by the information of eddy-induced pressure drops, which is suitable for use in liquid metal flows, and which can be used to provide a gag in a fuel channel associated with the core of a nuclear reactor operating in the first neutron region and cooled by liquid sodium, comprises a series of woven wire mesh barrier elements 3 the flow cross-sectioned area of which is selectively variable. Each element comprises a backing disc 8 having formed therein a plurality of spaced flow ports 9. Each flow port accommodates a wire mesh window 10 with the windows being secured in position by being trapped between the backing plate 8 and an insert plate 11 which is welded to plate 8, the insert plate being provided with flow ports corresponding in number and relative disposition to those of the backing plate 8. A plurality of such barrier elements 3 are arranged in a spaced relationship within a flow duct (2), Fig.1 (not shown), and each has disposed upstream thereof a masking plate (12) which has flow ports matching the woven wire mesh windows in the associated element 3. The masking plates 12 are mounted on, and are rotatable by a shaft (13) which extends along the axis of the flow duct, rotation of the shaft causing the masking plates to move between positions in which the windows are totally unobstructed and substantially obstructed.
