Abstract
1287850 Turbines HOWMET INTERNATIONAL Inc ZWEIGNIEDERLASSUNG KIEL AUSTENAL - POHL 10 Aug 1970 [28 Oct 1969] 38419/70 Heading FIT A surgical turbine comprises a cylindrical housing 1 containing a turbine rotor 11 driving a shaft 7 extending from one end of the housing, the other end of the latter having inlet and outlet driving gas connections 24, 36 respectively, gas flow through the rotor 11 being in a direction away from the tool carrying end of shaft 7. Driving gas, e.g. air, from inlet 24 flows through bore 23, past a control valve 25, and thence through passages 27, 26, 28, annular chamber 31, passages 18 and annular chamber 17 to the turbine nozzles 16. Gas from the latter then flows in the reverse direction through first and second stage turbine rotor blades 12, 13 and an intermediate stator 14 before exhausting through axial passages (33, 34) Fig.2 (not shown) in body members 20, 3 to outlet connection 36 concentrically surrounding inlet 24. Shaft 7 is supported in ball bearings 8, 9, 10 and has a bore 42 and clamping device 43, 44 to receive a surgical milling or drilling tool. Leakage of gas to the region of the tool is prevented by a cylindrical extension 38 from nozzle member 15, the extension surrounding shaft 7 and fitting into a bore 40 in rotor 11. The control valve 25 consists of a circular member having a cut-out 47 and sealingly supported in a recess 46 in body member 3 by seals 48. The valve 25 can be moved angularly to control the gas flow by means of a hand operated axially movable projection 58 which is connected to the valve via rod 57 and a spring-loaded control slide 51 pivotally engaging a pin 50 fixed to the valve. A brake is provided in the form of a bolt 63 biased to the off position by spring 66 and movable axially in bush 65 so as to bear against the end of shaft 7. The movement is effected by an arm 67 pivotally mounted at one end in a bore 68 in body 3 and bearing on the bolt head 64, the other end of arm 67 engaging a recess in control slide 51 such that when valve 25 is moved to the closed position the brake is applied.
