Abstract

1287595 Electro-photographic apparatus INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 15 Jan 1970 [29 Jan 1969] 2014/70 Heading G2H A xerographic copying machine has a reciprocating document carriage 13, Fig.3 for original documents to be copied and a cover 78 hinged to the carriage. An outer cover 14 is hinged at 16 and (18) Fig. 1 (not shown) to the top 12 of the machine. When the carriage 13 is in home position a roller 76, Fig.3, on a lever 70 pivoted on the cover 14 engages a flange 82 of the cover 76 to permit simultaneous raising of the covers. A mechanism (20) Fig. 1 (not shown) comprising a one-way clutch (41) Fig.4a (not shown) provided with a helical clutch spring (46) and spring tensioned pulley 59, Fig.3, acts to counterbalance movement of the cover 14, such that the cover will be maintained at whatever position it is left in. Downward movement of the cover is resisted by frictional braking of the spring (46) which is overcome by pressure exerted by the operator to effect closing. Raising of the cover is assisted by the spring tensioned pulley 59. Closure of cover 78 is prevented when oversize documents are placed on the carriage, thereby preventing movement of a handle 22 into latching position to inhibit starting of the machine and consequential jamming of the carriage.
