Abstract

1287136 Laminates AVERY PRODUCTIONS CORP 5 Nov 1969 [5 Nov 1968] 54265/69 Heading B5N A temporary laminate for processing and handling operations comprises a base layer, e.g. stiff paper, a heat-softening layer, e.g. polyethylene or wax, bonded on one surface to the base layer, the heat-softening layer being of material that assumes a condition in which it can effect mechanical bonding only at a temperature above ambient temperature and at a pressure above atmospheric pressure, and a mutable web, e.g. a woven or non-woven fabric or foil of plastics material or aluminium, directly and temporarily bonded to the opposite surface of the heat-softening layer by the application of heat and pressure, the mutable web when unsupported by the base layer having insufficient stability for processing and handling operations, e.g. decorating, cutting, blanking out, overlaminating, sheeting, slitting, rewinding or dispensing, the strength of the bond between the heatsoftening layer and the base layer being substantially greater than the strength of the bond between the heat-softening layer and the mutable web, and the cohesion of the heatsoftening layer being greater than the adhesion between the heat-softening layer and the mutable web, the strength of the mutable web, being sufficiently great that it is strippable from the heat-softening layer after the processing and handling operations and after stripping is free of the material of the heat-softening layer. The heat-softening layer may be bonded to the base layer by means of a pressure-sensitive adhesive. If the mutable web tends to shrink when heated a first base layer may be coated with a release coating, e.g. a silicone, coated with pressure sensitive adhesive, laminated with a heatsoftening layer, laminated by heat and pressure with the mutable web, and the first base layer stripped from the adhesive layer, the laminate comprising the mutable web, heat-softening layer and adhesive then being allowed to change in dimension to release stresses in the mutable web and then laminated to a second base layer by means of the adhesive layer, the bond between the second base layer and the heatsoftening layer being substantially stronger than the bond between the mutable web and the heatsoftening layer.
