Abstract

Heading B2E [Also in Division E2] A holding device for attaching an article to a supporting surface but allowing ready removal therefrom if so desired, and adapted to be adhered to the supporting surface comprises a flexible body portion having an inward peripheral slit extending at least partially thereabouts to form a marginal portion having separated portions with non-adherent means disposed between the separated portions. The major surface of the body portion of the device which adheres to the supporting surface may be naturally self-adhesive or coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. In one embodiment (Fig. 4) the device comprises a pair of superposed layers 12 and 14 of a flexible sheet material having naturally self adhesive characteristics such as plasticized polyvinyl chloride. The marginal portions 21 and 22 of each layer have their facing surface portions 25 and 26 made non- adhesive by interposing a sheet 29 in the form of a frame between layers 12 and 14 and formed of a material which will not bond with or adhere to the material of layers 12 and 14 e.g. cellulose acetate. The resulting sandwich-like arrangement is placed in a press and subjected to heat and pressure sufficient to bond or fuse together the central portions of the facing sides 17 and 18. Instead of a single sheet 29, there may be interposed two layers of frame-like material which are non-adhesive relatively to one another but which readily bond to the marginal portions 21 and 22 e.g. tissue paper. Alternatively a coating material may be applied to the marginal portions e.g. by silk screening. The device may be formed with a plurality of fused areas in spaced relationship (Fig. 8, not shown). The device may have one or both of its outward facing surfaces coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive, the adhesive coat being protected by a liner (Fig. 9, not shown). The article to be supported by the device may be e.g. a hanger having a smooth relatively non-porous back surface (Fig. 3, not shown).
