Abstract

1352187 Apparatus for making labels ELECTRO-SEAL CORP 19 April 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 24076/71 Heading B5N An apparatus for the manufacture of labels comprises a roll 34 for a carrier strip 14 having a layer of a thermoplastic adhesive 24 on a first side thereof, a roll 42 for a transfer strip having a first side to which said thermoplastic adhesive will more readily adhere than to the first side of said carrier strip, means for guiding the strips 14, 18 to a position in which said first sides of said strips are juxtaposed, means 64 for placing a plurality of labels between the juxtaposed strips with the adhesive receiving surface of the label facing the adhesive layer on the first side of the carrier strip 14, said adhesive receiving surface of the label being one to which said thermoplastic adhesive will more firmly adhere than to the first side of said carrier strip, means for applying heat and pressure, e.g. a heated shoe 58 and a roller 56 whereby the juxtaposed strips with the interposed labels are pressed together to form a temporary laminate and the temperature of the adhesive is brought to its adhering temperature whereby the adhesive adjacent the adhesive receiving surface of the label adheres thereto and the excess portion of the adhesive on the carrier strip not covered by the label adheres to the transfer strip, guide means which includes means for separating the strips in such a manner that the label now provided with a firm adhesive coating is lightly adhered to the carrier strip 14 and the transfer strip 18 carries the excess portion of adhesive away from the carrier strip. In an embodiment a nozzle 82 is provided for blowing heated gas to the juncture between the strips when they are split apart by the separating means, the hot gas assisting the removal of the excess portion of the thermoplastic adhesive from the carrier strip 14 to the transfer strip 18. The carrier strip is suitably of a metal foil 20 having a layer of release material 22 covered with the layer of thermoplastic adhesive 24 and the transfer strip is preferably of Kraft paper. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,243,970 and 1,202,357.
