Abstract
1287067 Measuring electrolyte density TUDOR A B 19 April 1971 [4 Feb 1970] 20872/71 Headings G1N and G1U Since electrolyte conductivity H, Fig.1 (e.g. that of dilute sulphuric acid in a battery, varies with its density P in the manner shown, in order to determine the density of a specimen of electrolyte by measuring its conductivity, firstly a measurement of its conductivity is made, secondly the density of the electrolyte is decreased (or increased), and finally a second measurement of conductivity is made and if this value is lower (or higher) than the first value then the density corresponds to a point such as P 1 on the graph, while if the second value of conductivity is higher (or lower) than the first value the density corresponds to a point such as P 2 . A device for use in performing the above measurements comprises a glass tube, Fig. 2, containing two pairs of measurement electrodes 2 and a pair of discharging or charging electrodes 5. In use the tube is immersed in the electrolyte, current is drawn from, or passed into the electrodes 5 so as to change the density of the neighbouring electrolyte, gas bubbles 8 are passed up the tube, and conductivity measurements are made by the pairs of electrodes 2, that made by the upper pair being used to determine to which point P 1 or P 2 the measurement from the first pair relates.
