Abstract

1423884 Measuring state of charge of batteries VARTA BATTERIE AG 6 Nov 1973 [6 Nov 1972] 51515/73 Heading H1B The state of charge is measured by determining the water vapour partial pressure in the gas space above the electrolyte space in the battery. The measuring member may be an hydrometer, the water vapour partial pressure being proportional to the electrolyte concentration and hence the charge state. Since the vapour pressure varies with temperature, the temperature is also measured and a correction applied to the vapour pressure value. In another method, the member comprises an ionexchange membrane which swells in correspondence with the concentration of the electrolyte vapour in the gas space. This latter method does not require temperature measurement.
