Abstract
1287009 TiO 2 containing rare earth oxides LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [5 Dec 1969] 59606/69 Heading C1N Pigmentary rutile TiO 2 containing Nd and Pr oxides in a weight ratio of from 0À5 : 1 to 5 : 1 is produced either by calcining a precipitated hydrous TiO 2 or by oxidizing a Ti tetrahalide in the presence of a source of the oxides. Hydrolysis process: a solution of a Ti compound, e.g. sulphate or chloride, is hydrolysed and a rutile promoting seed is incorporated with the solution and/or with the precipitate. The rare earth source may be added before or after drying of the precipitate in amount to give 0À05-1% by wt. of the oxides. Al, Zn, Mg and Li compounds, e.g. sulphates, may also be incorporated with the precipitate. Oxidation process: the halide is preferably TiCl 4 , and may be co-oxidized with AlCl 3 , ZrCl 4 , SiCl 4 , or Al metal. H 2 O vapour may also be introduced. The amount of rare earth oxides in the TiO 2 may be 0À002-5% by wt. The rare earth source for either process may be a gaseous or aqueous dispersion of a solid, e.g. oxide, hydroxide, chloride, or carbonate, or an aqueous solution, e.g. of chloride or nitrate. A "didymium" mixture may be used.
