Abstract

1286802 Tool changers ALFRED HER. BERT Ltd 4 Sept 1969 [9 Sept 1968] 42767/68 Heading B3B [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for identifying articles moving along a path, e.g. cutting tools in a tool magazine, workpieces moving between work stations, or a parcel sorting apparatus, is constructed so that the articles are moved by a chain conveyer, each link of the chain having a block 10 which at a particular station, moves in close proximity to a pneumatic reader 22 to identify the article carried by the link. Each block 10 carries an identifying element in the form of a spool 15 having lands and grooves (Fig. 2, not shown) to form a binary code associated with the article carried. A comparator 29 receives a code of a required article from a tape reader and when the code read by the reader 22 matches the code in the comparator a solenoid hydraulic valve 32 is operated to slow down the drive of the chain and a solenoid air valve 31 is also operated. This valve passes air to a port in the reader 22 which is blocked off by a button 13 on the block 10 at the required slot position. The blocking of the port causes a pressure rise which operates an hydraulic brake valve 34 to arrest the movement of the chain. The code on the spool 15 is read by providing a plurality of slots 23 in the reader which align with a plurality of holes 16 in the block 10. Air is passed down a plurality of passages 24 into the slots 23. According to whether a groove or a land of the spool 15 is opposite a particular hole 16 the air either passes to exhaust via a gallery 17 or pressure builds up to operate pressure switch 28 which passes a signal to the comparator 29. Air is only supplied to the slots 23 when a groove 18 in the block 10 is aligned with passages 26, 27.
