Abstract

1286735 Cutting webs S & S CORRUGATED PAPER MACHINERY CO Inc 14 Aug 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 39308/70 Heading B4B Apparatus for forming sheets 12 from a web 11 moving at uniform speed comprises adjustable knife means 15, 16, input power means 22 for driving the knife means 15, 16 and web feeding means 14, a brake 27 for stopping the knife means 15, 16 after cutting, a disengageable clutch 26 between the power means 22 and the knife means 15, 16 and a settable measuring means 28 for controlling engagement of the clutch 26 and release of the brake 27 in response to signals derived from the feeding means 14, whereby the knife means 15, 16 is actuated to cut sheets 12 of length determined by the setting of the measuring means 28 plus the movement of the web 11 during the interval required for a knife operating cycle. After advance of the web 11 through a cutoff unit 20 for a predetermined period, controlled by the measuring means 28, e.g. by counting shaft revolutions, a signal from the means 28 releases the brake 27 and actuates the clutch. The knife drums 15, 16 are then rotated through a variable speed drive 23 from a preset rest position through a point of maximum velocity at which cutting takes place, being braked to nest at the end of the cycle of rotation, the measuring means 28 resetting for a subsequent cycle. The drive 23 may include a quadric chain drive, slotted crank or elliptical gear transmission.
