Abstract

1286676 Polyether copolymers BP CHEMICALS Ltd 11 June 1970 [15 July 1969] 35537/69 Headings C3C and C3R Polyether copolymers having an average hydroxyl equivalent weight of at least 300 and a molecular weight of between 1000 and 6000 are prepared by reacting a mixture of one or more polyols and water, present in an amount of at least 5% molar based on the total polyol reactant, with at least two alkylene oxides, which are reacted sequentially, in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. Polyols include ethylene, propylene, butylene, polyethylene and polypropylene glycols, glycerol, trimethylol propane, 1,2,6 - hexanetriol, pentaerythritol, alpha-methylglucoside, sorbitol, dipentaerythritol and mixtures thereof. Diols may also be formed in situ from water and alkylene oxides. In examples a glycerol and water mixture was reacted successively with propylene oxide, ethylene oxide and propylene oxide in presence of KOH. The polyether products are subsequently reacted with toluene diisocyanate, water, silicone oil, triethylene diamine and stannous octoate to give a polyurethane foam in the form of moulded blocks.
