Abstract
1286071 Modified ammonium polyphosphates ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 22 Sept 1969 [4 Sept 1968] 42066/68 Heading C1A Ammonium polyphosphate is modified by the inclusion in the chains of non-phosphatic units derived from oxyanions of boron or sulphur, or from phosphite, sulphamate or organophosphonate anions in a proportion of phosphatic : non- phosphatic units of from 1 : 1 to 100 : 1. The ammonium polyphosphate preferably contains from 40 to 70% by weight of P 2 O 5 and has an atomic ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus of from 1À3 : 1 to 2À5 : 1, preferably 1À6 : 1 to 2À0 : 1. The ammonium polyphosphate preferably contains minor molar proportions of alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal cations and the non- phosphatic units are preferably derived from sulphate, sulphite, borate or phosphate. The modified polyphosphate has the general formula where M is Na, K or Ca, X is -[-SO 3 -]-, -[-SO 2 -]- or -[-HPO 2 -]-, v is the valency of M and h, m, n, p, q, b, x and y are all numbers from 0 to 20 such that p>2, p>q, (h+m+n)= (p+q+b+2), n>m, (p+q)/(b+x) is from 1 to 20, and m+n>h, and may also contain minor proportions of NH 4 OH, M(OH) v , ring phosphates having a formula as specified above with (h+m+n+2r)=(p+q+b+2) where r is the number of complete rings per molecule, borates, sulphates, orthophosphates and/or pyrophosphates. The modified polyphosphate is prepared by mixing (A) thiourea or preferably urea; (B) phosphoric or polyphosphoric acid containing up to 85% P 2 O 5 or a suspension of P 2 O 5 in polyphosphoric acid or an acid phosphate; (c) boric acid, boric oxide, a borate, a perborate, a pyroborate, sulphuric acid, a sulphate, a sulphite, phosphorous acid, a phosphite, a thiophosphite, sulphamic acid, a sulphamate and/or an organo-phosphonic acid or salt thereof; and optionally (D) an alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal oxide and/or hydroxide and heating the mixture until a self-sustaining exothermic reaction commences. The reaction mixture is preferably allowed to foam out of the reaction vessel on to or into a collecting floor or vessel. The modified ammonium polyphosphates may be used as sequestrants, threshold agents, dispersants, corrosion retarders, fertilizers or fire retardants.
