Abstract

1285717 Windscreen wiper control JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 20 Nov 1969 [6 Dec 1968] 58156/68 Heading A4F A switch for controlling a self parking windscreen wiper motor, has a stable on position and an on position from which it is resiliently urged to the off position. The switch comprises a body 11 having a compartment 12, a contact member 14 having a central part 15 rotatable in the body 11 and having two arms 16 and 17, and a second contact member 25 pivoted half way along arm 16 and extending over arm 17. Sets of resilient contacts 18, Fig.1 (not shown) and 27 respectively are provided on arm 16 and member 25, and cooperate with a printed circuit board 32 for switching. Each arm 16 and 17 carries a spring-loaded ball engaging detent means in the body 11, Fig.1 (not shown). Contact member 25 has a groove 28 in which is located a spring 29 engaging a post 31 on arm 17 to urge member 25 clockwise relative to arm 17 in Fig.2 until it abuts flange 20 on the contact member 14. A contral level 19 is fastened to a block 21 passing through and pivoted at 22 to the centre port 15 of contact member 14. A post 23 on port 21 extends through an aperture 26 in member 25 and through a rectangular slot in centre part 15 of member 14. A spring- loaded ball 24a engaging hole 33 in printed circuit board 32 urges post 23 to the right in Fig.4 and thus reinforces the action of spring 29. If lever 19 is turned either clockwise or anti-clockwise in Fig.3, contacts 18 or 27 co-operate with circuit board 32 to operate the wiper motor, member 25 moving with arm 17 by virtue of being held in contact with flange 20 by spring 29. One set of contacts may operate the motor at a different speed or with a delay between wipes. If lever 19 is moved instead into the paper, post 23 causes member 25 to move anti-clockwise, arm 17 remaining stationary, and contacts 27 co-operate with circuit board 32 to switch the wiper on. On releasing lever 19, springs 29 and 24 cause contact member 25 to move clockwise to disengage contacts 27, and the wiper stops after reaching its parking position. Case 11 has a slot 34 which allows lever 19 to move into the paper in Fig.3 only when the lever is in the central position as shown.
