Abstract
1285164 Polymerisation catalysts SNAM PROGETTI SpA 19 April 1971 [22 Jan 1970] 20413/71 Heading B1E [Also in Division C3] A catalytic system suitable for use in the stereospecific polymerisation of conjugated dienes comprises a polyimine of aluminium having the repeating unit where R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical, n is an integer and some of X are halogen atoms, the remainder being hydrogen atoms, in association with a compound of a Group IV to VIII transition metal such as TiCl 4 , TiI 4 , TiBr 4 , VCl 3 , ZrCl 4 , chloride of Co, Mn or Ni and cobalt acetylacetonate. In the polymerisation process the catalytic system may be preformed either by reacting the aluminium iminic polymer with the transition metal compound or it may be formed in situ by reacting the two catalytic components in the presence of the polymerisable monomer. In a particular example isoprene is polymerised to the 1, 4 cis polymer using a catalyst consisting of partially chlorinated polyiminoalane and TiCl 4 in an hydrous n-hexane.
