Abstract

1284602 Viscous dampers; bearings ROLLS ROYCE Ltd 8 May 1970 [10 May 1969] 23929/69 Headings F2A and F2S A viscous damper yieldably mounting the outer race 10 of a ball or roller bearing from a fixed structure 11 consists of two members 15, 16 capable of relative approaching and receding movement, facing surfaces of the members being formed with interdigitated projections 17 to give a zig-zag clearance between the members, the clearance being filled with a viscous liquid film. The outer race 10 of a roller bearing (top half of the Figure) is resiliently mounted from the fixed structure 11 by a conical member 12 with resilient fingers in parallel with the damper. Axial and radial movements of the race 10 are damped. In the ball bearing (lower half of the Figure) the resilient mounting is dispensed with. The oil used to lubricate the bearing may also serve as the damping liquid.
