Abstract

1283495 Repairing furnace linings CARBORUNDUM CO 6 Oct 1970 [15 Oct 1969] 47572/70 Heading F4B A refractory lining of a glass melting tank or blast furnace, formed of fused cast blocks, preferably of the alumina-zirconia-silica type, may be repaired whilst the furnace continues in operation, by replacing or backing up the old defective blocks with new blocks which are coated on at least those faces to be exposed to the furnace interior and which will lie adjacent to the blocks of the hot refractory lining, with insulating refractory fibres. The coating may comprise a refractory alumina-silica fibre paper secured to all the faces of the block by sodium silicate or silica sol refractory cement, or be formed from a refractory fibre paste of refractory alumina silica fibres with a sodium silicate or silica sol refractory binder, and is preferably 0À8 to 3À2 mm. or over thick and has a thermal conductivity of 0À0017 to 0À0069, preferably 0À0034 gm. cal./sec. cm.<SP>2</SP> ‹C./cm. Defective lining portions above the normal glass level in a melting tank are normally replaced, and portions below the glass level normally backed up by the new blocks. The level in the melting tank may be lowered temporarily during the repairing operation.
