Abstract

520,188. Glass furnace hearths. HARTFORDEMPIRE CO. Oct. 12, 1938, No. 29571. Convention date, Nov. 4, 1937. Drawings to Specification. [Class 51 (ii)] The hearth of a glass furnace comprises a layer of refractory granular material which will not sinter at the working temperature of the furnace, and a superposed layer of blocks made' of a material such as the electrocast mullite described in Specification 265,847, [Class 22], which has a glassy matrix phase separable when the blocks are heated, the joints between the blocks being filled by a refractory granular substance of such a matrix that it will intimately contact with the sides of the blocks and will react when heated with the separable glassy phase to weld the blocks into a substantially monolithic structure. The joints between the blocks may widen downwardly and the filling material consisting mainly of corundum with small proportions of clay, kaolin and defloculents such as silicate of soda and sodium carbonate is preferably slip cast into the joints. The granular layer is composed of a grog of the alumina-silica class made from a mixture of bauxite, monohydrate of alumina, clay and felspar burnt at a temperature exceeding 2800‹F., and subsequently broken down into “ inch grains. The blocks and the subjacent granular layer are supported on a lower insulating layer Analyses of suitable materials for use in making the filling and the granular .layer are given. Specification 469,723 also is referred to.
