1283310 Supplying sliver to spinning machines; sliver cans SCHUBERT & SALZER MASCHINENFABRIK AG 17 Nov 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 54604/70 Heading D1F In a method of supplying sliver F to a spinning machine 1 having spinning stations 4, the sliver is filled into cans 3 at a preceding fibre treating machine, is moved in these cans 3 to the spinning machine 1, is filled into supply cans 5 arranged permanently adjacent the spinning machines and is passed to the spinning stations 4 from the supply cans 5. The sliver F is fed from the can 3 to a refilling device 2 which is preferably a coiler to deposit the sliver in the supply cans 5. In a preferred embodiment, the supply cans 5 are arranged on a series of four tracks K 1 , K 2 , K 3 K 4 , the tracks K 1 , K 4 being positioned for the feed of sliver to the spinning stations 4 in a double-sided spinning machine. The supply cans 5 are aranged such that three tracks are fully occupied. During a filling operation, the tracks K 1 and K 4 are stationary and the cans 5 are moved stepwise from track K 3 to track K 2 via the filling device 2. The cans are prevented from transfer to tracks K 1 and K 4 by means of pivoted flaps 71 and 72. When the cans in track K 1 are emptied by the spinning stations, the tracks K 1 , K 2 are circulated to transfer filled cans 5 to the track K 1 and empty cans to the track K 2 , the pivoted flaps 71 having been moved to position 71' to prevent misdirection of cans. The motor driving the tracks K 2 , K 3 is then reversed and the flaps pivoted back to their original positions. The empty cans 5 are then moved stepwise from track K 2 to track K 3 via the filling device 2, the flaps are again pivoted and transfer of cans from track K 3 to track K 4 and vice versa is effected. The motor is again reversed and the cycle is repeated. In this embodiment the tracks K 1 , K 2 , K 3 and K 4 take the form of endless chains 61, 62 and 63 with can engaging dogs 67 and restraining rails 75 and 76. In a further embodiment, all four can tracks are fully occupied by supply cans, and the inner tracks are connected together at both ends. All the cans on the inner tracks are circulated via the filling device so that all cans on the inner tracks are filled. The filled cans are then transferred to the spinning stations tracks on both side of the spinning frame simultaneously. In an alternative embodiment, the cans are not circulated but are exchanged by lateral transfer in rows, which tranfer can be alternately to the two sides of a spinning frame or simultaneously. The lateral transfer is effected by means of rails extending the length of the rows and mounted on arms depending from the machine frame and reciprocable in a direction transverse -to the rows of spinning stations.
